What do volunteers do?
There are all sorts of opportunities for volunteers to assist
with. These range from active fire fighting and Emergency
Medical Services (EMS) to administrative and auxiliary duties.
By becoming a volunteer you will be providing the community
with an invaluable service.
With the proper training you would be able to:
-
Respond to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical
assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle
accidents and other emergency situations when notified.

Suppress, control and extinguish fires.
-
Performs forcible entry, search, rescue, & extrication of
trapped victims.
-
Drive, operate and monitor a variety of fire and emergency
vehicles according to level of training.

Administer first aid, artificial respiration, life support
or other medical care according to level of certification.
-
Assist career department personnel with inspections of
buildings for pre-incident plans, fire hazards and
compliance with fire prevention ordinances.

Participate in organized community service activities.

What types of people volunteer?
Our volunteers come from many walks of life. We have college
and high school students, professionals, and homemakers that
take time from their busy lives to give back to the community
by volunteering their services with the GCFD. In fact the
more diverse our members backgrounds are, the stronger our
organization becomes, with each individual bringing the
knowledge in their area of expertise to the organization.

What kind of
training will I receive?
As a member you will be required to be trained in and maintain
certain certifications. This training is available free of
charge through the Georgia Fire Academy and through the
Department. Basic training and skill maintenance exercises
are run at the GCFD stations on daily basis with the complete
classes being offered on an as needed basis. More advanced
classes can be taken if the member is interested.

What is the time commitment I need to make?
All members are required to maintain minimum levels of
participation in the following:
-
Attend and actively participate in monthly business and
weekly training meetings. (Meetings: typically Tuesday
nights at 7:30 pm at a Glynn County fire station)

Participate in monthly station duty.
-
Maintain a state of readiness for emergency response.
-
Respond to emergency calls and other emergency situations
when notified.
An active volunteer can expect to dedicate a minimum of 20 to
48 hours a month depending on the call volume for the month.
This varies greatly during the month of October when the
volunteers have an active role during Fire Prevention Week and
the display at the Exchange Club Fair.

What are the qualification requirements?
In order to become a Firefighter or Emergency Medical Services
Provider you must:

High school diploma or GED is required.
-
Must be at least eighteen (18) year of age.
-
Must pass background check.
-
Possess a valid Georgia driver’s license.
-
Be a Resident of Glynn County.

What is the application process?
An application packet consists of a written application to the
GCFD and a background check. Upon administrative approval of
the application, the applicant must be voted in by the
membership, finally becoming a probationary member of GCFD.

How long does it take?
The application process typically can take 2 – 6 weeks. New
members are probationary for a minimum of 12 months.
