J. Michael Gilmore, 67, of St. Simons Island died
Friday, October 28, 2005. Mike was a native and lifelong
resident of Glynn County, having graduated from Glynn
Academy in 1957, and serving in the U.S. Air Force for
six years. He then began his career as a Firefighter. He
retired with the rank of Captain from the Glynn County
Fire Department, serving for more than 50 years and
continuing to actively volunteer. He was a member of the
Railroad Club of Brunswick and enjoyed trains, planes
and auto racing.
He is survived
by his wife, Betty Hinely Gilmore of St. Simons Island;
a daughter and son-in-law, Camille and Charles Tucker of
Bethlehem; a granddaughter, Emma Camille Tucker of
Bethlehem; a brother, John L. Gilmore of St. Simons
Island; a nephew, Sidney Babjak and his wife, Teona, of
St. Simons Island; a niece, Marisa Wiggins and her
husband, Jim, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a sister-in-law,
Peggy Bates and her husband, Bobby, of Hilton Head
Island, S.C.; a cousin, Camille Penders of St. Simons
Island; a special friend, Edith Smoak of St. Simons
Island; and a great niece and great nephew, Jennifer
Babjak and Bryan Babjak, both of Valdosta.
A memorial
service with military and firefighter honors will be
held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at St.
William's Catholic Church on St. Simons Island. Father
John A. Keneally will officiate. Chief A.L. Thomas and
Chief L.J. Stewart will also speak.
Burial will
follow in Palmetto Cemetery.
