Claude Dyson Flanders, 77, of Darien died Sunday at his home.
Services will be held
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, at St. Andrew's Episcopal
Church in Darien with the Rev. George Bowers officiating.
The family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral
Home.
He was preceded in
death by his parents, Mary Dyson Flanders and Charles E.
Flanders; his son, Robert Dyson Flanders; and his brother, Mal
Flanders. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lloyd Young
Flanders; his daughter, Laura F. Bowers of N. Charleston, S.C.;
four grandchildren, Sarahann Bowers and Elizabeth Lloyd Bowers,
both of South Carolina, and Robert Thomas Flanders and
Christopher Dyson Flanders, both of Brunswick; and his brother,
Dr. Charles E. Flanders Jr. of Dover Bluff.
Dyson was a native of
Brunswick and a graduate of Glynn Academy. He served in the U.S.
Army with the occupation forces in Northern Italy. He attended
South Georgia College and graduated from the University of
Florida in 1953 with a BSA in Horticulture. He was employed by
the Sea Island Company for more than 25 years.
He resided on St.
Simons Island for 33 years and served as a Volunteer Fireman for
more than 25 years as Secretary, Chaplain and Chief. He was
President of the St. Simons Jaycees, President of the Mozart
Society of Glynn County, President of the Coastal Georgia
Historical Society and Cubmaster at Christ Church Scout Troop.
In his years as a member of Christ Church, Frederica, he served
several terms as Junior Warden. He was a longtime Director of
the LeConte-Woodmanston Society. In Darien, he was Chairman of
the Historical Preservation Commission and was a Director of the
Lower Altamaha Historical Society. At St. Andrew's, he served as
a Lay Eucharistic Minister and was on the Board of Directors of
the Episcopal Conference Center at Honey Creek.
