Ben T. Ramsey Jr., age 81, enjoyed life as a native and lifelong
resident of Glynn County. A devoted husband, father and
grandfather, Ben passed away after a long illness on September
1, 2005. He was born on March 2, 1924. He was predeceased by his
parents, Ben T. Ramsey Sr. and Florence Burkhalter Ramsey.
Family members include
his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Virginia P. Ramsey; son
and daughter-in-law, Ben III and Tammy Ramsey of Brunswick;
daughter and son-in-law, Flo and Tom Bliss of Jacksonville,
Florida; daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Paul Nix of Cherokee
County, Georgia; and grandchildren, Ashby and Justin Nix,
Rebecca, Thomas and Matthew Bliss and Shelby Ramsey.
After graduating from
Glynn Academy in 1942, Mr. Ramsey attended Emory at Oxford
College and Emory University. He retired as a Quality Control
Analyst for Hercules Inc. with 40 years of service. He was a
lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, where he
served as Scoutmaster for 17 years of Boy Scout Troop No. 204,
the largest troop in the Waycross District. Mr. Ramsey organized
camping trips to the mountains, Washington, D.C., Canada and
Camp Tolochee, which he helped develop. He received numerous
Scouting awards, including the Silver Beaver Award for
distinguished service and was honored with the Boy Scout Oscar
Award. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the
Jaycees. He helped establish the Glynn County Republican Party,
where he served as past chairman and was active on the district,
state and national levels. For this, he was recognized by
President Ronald Reagan for his leadership skills. Mr. Ramsey
helped establish the Ballard Volunteer Fire Department and was
elected Volunteer Fire Chief. He was an inspiration throughout
his life, always giving of his time and talents. He never let
his handicap from polio as an infant slow him down.
A memorial service will
be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Carlton Carruth officiating.
Private family
interment will be held at a later date.
Former Boy Scouts will
serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive
friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral
Home.
In lieu of flowers, the
family has requested donations be made to either the Camp
Tolochee Fund, c/o Okefenokee Council, Boy Scouts of America,
P.O. Box 718, Waycross, GA 31502 or the Hospice of the Golden
