A
native of Wayne County, Garland was a member of the Jesup Church
of God, retired Captain of Rescue for the Glynn County Fire
Department and an avid musician, singer and songwriter. He was a
member of the Selective Service Board of the armed forces for 15
years and was named the “Georgia Fire Safety Educator of the
Year,” in October, 2001. He hosted a weekly radio talk show
"Fire Side Chat" in Glynn County promoting fire safety
education and was a enthusiastic community volunteer.
Garland
Evors was best known to school children as "Smoke House
Willy," a character he played as a clown in fire safety and
fire prevention classes. In 1991, Garland and Freddy Howell,
assistant chief of the Waycross Fire Department, formed the
Georgia Firefighters Clown Society in Forsyth, Georgia.
Garland
scheduled his vacations every year to coincide with Camp Oo-U-La,
a weeklong summer camp that the Georgia Firefighters Burn
Foundation holds for children who have suffered serious burn
injuries. He served on the foundation's board for more than 10
years and as a major supporter always helped organize the
activities for the campers.
Garland
Evors had been promoted to captain of Glynn County's Emergency
Medical Services division in January of 2002.
Garland
is survived by his wife, Glenda Morgan Evors of Jesup; two sons,
Chadley Garland Evors and John Lewis Evors, both of Jesup; his
mother, Mary Evors of Jesup; a sister and brother-in-law, June
and Larry Reddish of Jesup; four brothers and sisters-in-law,
Fred and Jeanie Evors of Philadelphia, Pa., Kenny and Diane
Evors, Lacy and Judy Evors and Willie and Susan Evors, all of
Jesup; a half brother and his wife, Daniel and Tammy O’Neal of
Honolulu, HI; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Mae
Morgan of Jesup; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Vivian and
the late Johnny Morgan, Delores and Sonny Peel, Frankie and
Preston Hope, Kathy and Danny Carter, all of Jesup; and several
nieces and nephews.
Visitation
was held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2002 at Rhinehart
and Sons Funeral Home, 860 U.S. 301, Jesup.
Funeral
services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 21, 2002 from
the Jesup Church of God with the Rev. Leroy Spivey, the Rev.
Calvin Anderson, the Rev. Steve Pittman and Bishop Gary Johnson
officiating. Interment followed at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.
Active
pallbearers were Glynn County Fire Department personnel, Greg
Driggers, James Stewart, Jerome “Fred” Johnson, Lester
Rooks, Mark Amick, Frank Wallace, Jimmy Ellis and Jim Caton.
Honorary pallbearers were Roger Graham, Billy Smith and all
other members of the Glynn County Fire Department.
