Thomas Lawrence "Captain Van" VanAlstyne, 71, of Brunswick died
Friday at his residence.
The funeral service,
with full military and firefighters honors, will be held at 11
a.m. Tuesday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev.
Randy Lamb officiating. Inurnment will follow in Chapel Park
Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Hal
Herndon, Mike Armstrong, Ray Marat, Jerome Johnson, Jimmy Ellis
and Al Thomas.
Honorary pallbearers
will be the Glynn County Fire Department, the Civil Air Patrol,
Ronald Barnet, Edward Jacques, Robin Andrews, Dr. William J.
Laws, Dr. David Kranc, Dr. Eric Friedrich and Dr. Scott Kellogg.
The family will receive
friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Surviving are his wife
of 46 years, Agnes VanAlstyne; a son and daughter-in-law, Don
and Tamara VanAlstyne of Brunswick; a daughter and son-in-law,
Linda and Steve Copeland of Brunswick; a brother, Walter
VanAlstyne of Derby, Conn.; two sisters, Nancy Crossley of
Ephrata, Pa., and Edith Gill of Nashua, N.H.; three
grandchildren, Michelle Walden (husband Brian), Michael Copeland
and Kelly VanAlstyne, all of Brunswick; and two
great-grandchildren, Eric and Cassidy Walden of Brunswick.
A native of Bridgeport,
Conn., Mr. VanAlstyne had lived in Glynn County for the past 37
years. He served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, retired as a
senior chief, electronics technician. Mr. VanAlstyne was then
employed by the Glynn County Fire Department for 22 years,
retiring as fire marshall/chief of fire prevention. He was a
member of the Amateur Radio Relay League and a former member of
the Civil Air Patrol, the Civil Defense Rescue Squad and a
former Ballard volunteer fireman. Mr. VanAlstyne enjoyed flying,
amateur radio, computers, woodworking and photography.
