Glynn
County Fire Chief John Kenneth Harrison died early Thursday
morning, August 18, 1966 at his St. Simons Island home after an
extended illness. Harrison,
54, was born in Glynn County and attended county schools and the
University of Georgia off-campus classes. He was a member
of the Advent Christian Church, a charter member of both the
Golden Isles Masonic Lodge No. 707, and the Golden Isles Order
of the Eastern Star. He
was employed as a Brunswick fire fighter from 1931-1951,
retiring as assistant chief after 20 years of service. In
1952 he was employed by Glynn County as Chief of the St. Simons
Fire Department, and organized the St. Simons volunteer
firemen. In 1964 he became the Glynn County Fire Chief and
organized the Ballard Volunteer Fire Department. He
was the president of the State Fireman's Association and a
member of the International Fire Chief's Association, the Eighth
District Fire Chief's Association, and the Glynn County Fire
Chief's Association. Harrison
is survived by his wife, the former Sally Dunby; one son, Neil
Harrison, of Brunswick; and one sister, Mrs. Clyde Dozier of
Brunswick. Active
pallbearers will be members of the Glynn County Commission: A.
A. Alaimo, W. G. Moran, Millard Copeland, A. L. Wooten, James D.
Paulk, and Howard J. Sears county administrator. Honorary
pallbearers will be members of the Glynn County, the St. Simons,
Brunswick, Jekyll Island and Glynco Fire Departments, and the
Golden Isles Lodge. The
family requested that donations in lieu of flowers be made to
the American Cancer Society, Glynn County Chapter, or the
Georgia State Order of the Eastern Star Cancer Aid Fund. Source:
