School Plants Memorial Tree

By: Bobby Haven / The Brunswick News

Kindergarten students at Sterling Elementary School gather in front of the school Friday to help plant a live oak tree in honor of their classmate, Andrew Powell, who died in a house fire in March. Members of the Glynn County Fire Department decided to donate the tree to honor the child and to help students and faculty with the grieving process. Helping plant the tree is Jenny Jaeger, Andrew’s teacher, left, Andrew’s brother, first-grade student James Powell, and Cindy Williams, para-professional. The memorial tree celebration included reflections of Andrew given by teachers and the reading of poems, and it concluded with the singing of “I Believe I Can Fly,” by teacher Rebecca Erwin.
