ST SIMONS ISLAND, GA – The Glynn
County Fire Department was notified through the counties 911 center of a
possible structure fire on Cypress Point. The caller stated that they saw smoke
coming from the area of the garbage disposal below the sink.
Station 2 acknowledged the dispatch
and Squad 2 and Ladder 4, along with Engines 2 and 4 responded to the scene.
While in route, the dispatcher advised that the caller stated that they could
see flames coming from the area and were advised to leave the residence.
Squad 2 and Engine 2 arrived on scene
only minutes later. Lieutenant Vanburen, arriving on Engine 2, advised other
personnel that there was light smoke showing from the rear of the structure.
Personnel quickly determined that the
fire was a plastic waste basket located below the sink. Fortunately for the
homeowner the fire actually burned through a water line resulting in the fire
being put out prior to the departments arrival on scene.
After determining that the fire was
out, fire fighters checked the area for any possible extension, and began
cleaning the area up. Crews remained on scene for a short time cleaning the
kitchen up and removing the small amount of water and insuring that the
occupants were okay.
Damage was limited to the cabinets in
the immediate area of the fire and there were no injuries associated with the
incident.
