Glynn County Fire Department Capt.
Frank Wallace likes to looking at all of the collectibles on display at the
county's Fire Prevention Week exhibit at Glynn Place Mall.
But he has a favorite.
It's a Glynco Naval Air Technical
Training Center patch from the 1970s.
The base once operated in the same
spot where his fire station now stands at the Brunswick-Golden Isles airport.
"It was a bidding war to get that
patch on eBay," he said with a chuckle on Monday. "Even though it was
technically a naval base at the time, it was still a part of our history."
For the past 18 years, the Glynn
Place Mall has allowed the county fire department to set up a display to mark
National Fire Prevention Month during October.
This year, the fire department has
rented a room directly in the center of the mall, adjacent to the food court.
Inside are pictures and memorabilia
from different private collections.
There are various patches,
photographs, old equipment pieces and other knick-knacks.
Some are antiques and valuable, said
Wallace.
There are also pictures of county
firefighters hanging on the wall throughout, showing them fighting flames and
dousing smoky buildings.
At the center of the room is a table
filled with pamphlets and small souvenirs.
Chris Childress, 21, walked inside
the room and looked wide-eyed at the various displays on Monday.
"This is awesome," he said as he
looked at figurines inside a glass case. "I really like how everything is
set-up."
Near the front of the room is a table
where paramedics will be giving free blood pressure tests.
There will also be live entertainment
throughout the week, including a puppet and clown show and live fire displays in
the parking lot of the mall on Saturday.
The exhibit will be open all week
from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Saturday, the display opens at 10 a.m., and the
Glynn County volunteer firefighters will put on fire fighting demonstrations
outside starting at 1 p.m.
Wallace said he hopes to see large
crowds peruse the exhibits throughout the week.
"We hope people will come and look
around, and if they have any questions about fire safety, we will be more than
happy to answer them," he said.
