ST. SIMONS ISLAND - A fast-moving
fire destroyed the home of a St. Simons Island restaurateur Tuesday night a few
blocks away from his supper club in the island's pier village.
John "J Mac" Mason and his family
were not home when the blaze was reported about 9:30 p.m. by neighbors. No
injuries were reported, said Capt. Jerome Johnson of the Glynn County Fire
Department.
The three-story home at 103 Strachan
Lane was engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived less than five minutes
later, Johnson said.
The cause and origin of the fire are
under investigation. Fire officials were sifting through debris in search of
clues Wednesday, Johnson said.
"We estimate the damage loss at about
$1.1 million," Johnson said.
Heat from the blaze scorched the
walls of neighboring homes on both sides of the house, but firefighters kept the
flames from spreading, he said.
The family was working at the
restaurant, J Mac's Island Restaurant and Martini Bar, when the fire broke out,
Johnson said.
About 40 fire and rescue personnel
responded. Firefighters aided by an aerial ladder truck contained the blaze
within 30 minutes. The fire burned so hot that it took about three hours to
extinguish.
