Brush fires across southeast Georgia
continued Monday. The newest began at a factory outside Jesup. According to the
Jesup Fire Department, something ignited rolls of paper material at the
Absorption Corporation off Highway 84 Monday morning.
Within minutes, 30-mile-per hour
winds picked up the sparks and sent them in several directions. Before fire
crews could arrive and control the blazes, they burned nearly 100 acres and
threatened one subdivision.
According to Fire Chief Tony
Brinkley, it even melted the vinyl siding on one home.
"It was a case where we couldn't be
in every place at the same time," he explained.
Chief Brinkley also thanked the
responding fire crews from Brunswick, Glynn County, Hinesville, Liberty County,
Ludowici, Long County and others who helped them get the blazes under control.
Jesup Fire Department is still trying
to figure out what caused the fire at the plant. Absorption Corporation makes a
paper-like material that soaks up liquids and it used in cat liter and other
products.
