GLYNN COUNTY, GA – An authorized burn
using an air curtain destructor got out of control resulting in the response of
the Glynn County Fire Department.
Personnel operating the air curtain
destructor notified the fire department of the fire when it spread to a pile of
debris that was not intended to be burned. In preparation of the departments’
arrival they also shut down the air curtain destructor and moved it out of the
way.
Ambers from the burn pit are
believed to have started the fire, which spread from the burn pit to a large
pile of mixed debris. The large pile of debris contained everything from stumps
to yard trimmings, and tires to appliances and other items.
As the call was for a trash fire,
the initial response to the fire was with a single engine. Upon arrival, and
assessing the situation, additional units were called for as well as the
volunteers.

Firefighters
work a hoseline up the side of the pile to cool hot spots with
water.

With the closest hydrant being over
1400 feet away personnel set up a relay pumping operation to get water from the
hydrant to a fire engine at the actual fire. Heavy equipment was utilized to
break up the pile, while firefighters used ground monitors and handlines to
extinguish the blaze.
While physically exhausted there
were no injuries resulting from the fire.
