ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA – At approximately 2:00 am, Thursday morning the Glynn County Fire Department was notified of smoke in the area of Hawkins Island subdivision.  As units were responding, to a smoke investigation, they quickly realized that the smoke was coming from a residential structure fire and requested that other units be notified.

Once on location, engine 4 advised that they had fire through the roof.  In addition to engine 4, engines 2 and 7 responded as well as ladder 4, an ambulance and the volunteers.

Department personnel responding from Brunswick, on the mainland, reported seeing a bright orange glow in the otherwise dark night sky confirming the initial report of fire through the roof.

Several attempts where made to attack the fire from the interior, each time being unsuccessful as firefighters were pushed back due to the extreme fire conditions.  Ultimately, the master stream from

Ladder 4 along with other attack lines were used defensively until the fire was knocked down enough for crews to make entry and extinguish the fire.

The extreme fire conditions, along with the non-typical construction type resulted in a difficult fire to get under control.  During suppression operations there was a partial structural collapse.  Fortunately, there were no personnel in the structure at the time of the collapse.

The residence and contents, estimated at over three-million dollars, was a near total loss.  At the owners’ request, firefighters were able to remove a vehicle from the garage preventing it from being involved.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire and the cause and origin is under investigation.
