GLYNN COUNTY, GA – At approximately
4p.m. on December 26th, the Glynn County Fire Department was notified of a
structure fire at 144 Harbor Pointe Drive on Oak Grove Island.
Engine 3, responding from Station 3,
was first in, followed shortly by Engine 11 and Ladder-Tower 1 coming from
Station 1. Squad 6, Car 66 and Car 52 also responded.
Engine 3 arrived and confirmed the
initial call of heavy smoke coming from the eves of the multi-story single
family home. Engine 3 officer, Lieutenant Armstrong, lead the initial attack
until the arrival of Capt. Poppell.
After locating the area containing
the fire and notifying command, the decision was made to set up the Ladder-Tower
and place a ventilation team on the roof. Volunteer Firefighters Fernandes and
Long made up the vent team and were moved into position by the platform
operator, Volunteer Firefighter Everett. As the team moved into position, part
of the roof collapsed and flames shot up as the fire self-ventilated. Command,
(Acting Deputy Chief) Capt. Armstrong, decided to pull out the attack team and
set up a defensive operation centered around LT-1’s ability to put massive
amounts of water from angles not obtainable by ground-based hand lines. After
several min. of applying water through the roof, the fire was deemed “under
control” and the attack team again moved in. The remainder of the fire was
quickly knocked out and overhaul operations were completed soon there after.
Damage was limited to the bonus room
above the garage and a portion of the roof of the approximately 4,000 sq. ft.
home.
No families were displaced due to the
home being under construction and no injuries were reported was a result of the
fire.
