Turning up the HEAT...young
firefighters get first taste of FIRE.
GLYNN COUNTY, GA – Deep on the Glynco
Jetport property, lies a 1940’s era concrete bunker used as a radar station back
in World War II. Starting a new life about 20 years ago as a training
facility used to train firefighters with an actual fire load present.
Firefighters face a controlled fire
atmosphere with instructors available to the "Probies" or non-certified
firefighters as they use their training gained to battle the blaze.
This year being the last that the
department will use the facility they "turned up the heat" in which it reached
approximately 1800 degrees and hotter at ceiling level.
Several agencies were involved
including St. Mary’s Fire Department, Waynesville and Atkinson Volunteer Fire
Departments from Brantley County and both volunteer and paid personnel from
Glynn County.
Upon completion of the training which
consists of over 120 hours both in academics and practical exercises the probies
are then promoted to a Certified Mod 1 Firefighter. In Glynn County probies are
then allowed to take off there blue stripes which signified an un-certified
firefighter. A few such individuals are firefighters Andy Chitty, Joe
Howard, Chase Lawrence, and Connor McHale.
Special thanks to Capt. Poppell and
the volunteer instructors are well deserved for their outstanding professional
instruction and overall dedication to training.
Residents in Glynn and surrounding
counties are now safer because of the loyalty of these firefighters to their
respective communities.
