ST. SIMONS ISLAND -- An early morning fire Thursday gutted a self-service laundry in the heart of the Village commercial district.

No injuries were reported in the blaze at McClean Services, 311 Mallory St., according to Capt. Jerome Johnson of the Glynn County Fire Department.

Johnson said the fire was accidental. It apparently started when a commercial presser overheated, igniting lint and dust.

Damage was estimated at $65,000, he said.

The fire was reported about 6 a.m. by a worker at a nearby restaurant, who spotted smoke pouring from the building, Johnson said.

About 15 Glynn County and volunteer firefighters using a ladder truck and three engines battled the blaze. They quickly contained the fire to the laundry, preventing it from spreading to adjacent businesses.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within about 25 minutes after arriving at the scene, Johnson said.

An adjacent business, SouthEast Adventure Outfitters, 313 Mallory St., sustained minor smoke damage, Johnson said.
