As difficult as it sometimes is
getting into the holiday spirit before Christmas, it can be even more of a
challenge gathering the energy to take down all those Christmas lights around
the house afterwards.
Give yourself a break next season and
take the time this year to properly store your Christmas lights safely.
When taking down lights, make sure
any ladders or chairs are on a flat surface and have a firm footing.
It's a good idea to wrap each strand
of lights individually so they will not get tangled.
Doing so now will not only save time
next year, but also will reduce the risk of broken bulbs.
Inspector Amos Robinson of the Glynn
County Fire Department advises people to check each set of lights, new or old,
for frayed wires and damaged sockets, and to discard damaged sets.
Once properly dismantled, it's also
important that lights are stored away from damp or extremely hot areas.
"Keep them safely stored away out of
reach of children," said Robinson.
Remember to label indoor and outdoor
lights correctly when packing them.
Indoor lights should not be exposed
to water, and outdoor lights generate too much heat for use indoors.
