GLYNN COUNTY, GA – October 10 thru
15, 2005 the Glynn county Fire Department continued a fifteen year old local
tradition by promoting fire prevention and safety in a store in the Colonial
mall at Glynn Place.
The ‘store,’ donated by the mall,
provided the location to display the Department personnel’s private collections
of fire fighting memorabilia and collectibles. Additionally the store provided
a location to distribute fire safety tips and information to the public.
Wednesday, the stores center piece
arrived. Engine 32, a 1952 Chevrolet/Peter-Pirsch, one of the Department’s
first fire engines was put on display in the store. This engine always draws a
crowd.
Throughout the week personnel offered
free blood pressure checks at the store. This year the department provided free blood
pressure checks at the store location in addition to those regularly offered at
the stations year round.
Georgia Forestry participated in Fire
Prevention Week activities this year. Through out the week Forestry personnel
where on hand to answer questions along with ‘Smokey’ the bear that toured the
mall with our Departments very own ‘Flame’ the fire dog. This duo was a huge
hit with the kids.
Saturday brought the largest displays
out as well as the largest efforts by department personnel. Georgia Forestry as
well as the Glynn County Fire Department had Apparatus on display in the mall
parking lot. The Fire Departments’ smoke house was on hand and was utilized to
educate several groups of children on fire safety and EDITH
(Exit-Drills-In-The-Home). The Departments Fire Safety clowns where on hand
touring the mall and doing several skits throughout the day.
This year the Departments'
personnel committed many man hours during the week and had approximately 750 visitors to the
store. In addition to spreading fire prevention information the volunteer
division had several perspective members visit the store and request information
about becoming a volunteer fire fighter.
