ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA – National Fire
Prevention Week set an appropriate stage for a dedication ceremony of a new fire
station in Glynn County. Station 2 located on Demere Road was dedicated
Wednesday October 12, 2005.
The personnel of station 2 along with
others spent the morning getting ready for the dedication ceremony, which began
at 11:30 am.
On display during the ceremony was
engine 32, one of the first fire engines that the Glynn County Fire Department
owned. Engine 32 was one of the first engines to be in service at the old
station 2 located about 2 miles down Demere Road. In addition to the old engine
newer apparatus were also on display.
As with all dedication ceremonies
there were several distinguished guests and speakers. Members of the Glynn
County Fire Department, Glynn County Police Department were present as well as
several County and City Commissioners. Also present were members Brunswick Fire
Department along with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which will have
an office in the building.
Chief Thomas spoke about tradition
and the memories of station 2 during the dedication ceremony. Glynn County
Commissioner Cap Fendig and Carl Johnson both spoke at the dedication. The
commissioners both commended the SPLOST sales tax for providing the necessary
funding for the new station.
Following the speakers the Glynn
County Fire Departments’ color guard presented and raised the US flag
symbolizing the official opening of the new station. In addition to the Fire
Station the St. Simons Police precinct and a community meeting room are located
in the building.
The volunteer division of the Glynn
County Fire Department provided the refreshments that were enjoyed by all in
attendance. Tours of the station were provided to all interested. |
