Fourth of July fireworks display on St. Simons Island.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA – Monday, July 4th, brought to an end a very festive weekend in the golden isles with the annual fireworks display at the pier on St. Simons Island.  During the weekend vendors have been in Neptune Park participating in the annual sunshine festival.

As the day progressed firefighters’ expressed concerns about the prevailing winds that were blowing on shore.  Firefighters were also receiving reports from surrounding areas that indicated that the show may be rained out.  As the evening progressed fire department personnel established a safety zone around the launch site and at about 7:00 pm with the assistance of the Glynn County Police closed off the area.

A St. Simons Island resident, Sandy Gamble, stated that “the fireworks seemed to be better this year that in the past.”  As the show began the concern about the wind blowing onto the crowd became real.  Firefighters and paramedics were prepared to treat injuries.  Ms Gamble referred to the falling ambers as “interactive fireworks” and felt that they added to the excitement of the evening.  “As the fireworks came down we would move out of the way and then return cheering the show.”

Fire department personnel were placed on top of the nearest buildings to monitor the shows fallout and insure that no fire resulted from the show.  Following the show personnel checked the roof top of other nearby buildings that had ambers falling around it to insure that the roofs was safe.

Fortunately only a handful of injuries were reported and treated as a result of the fireworks.  Personnel returned to their stations by approximately 11:00 pm.
