Paramedics need best information

When a call goes out about a medical emergency, paramedics and emergency medical technicians with the Glynn County Fire Department respond quickly.

With 20 paramedics and 24 EMTs, the department responds as fast as it can to help residents in need.

But there are a few things callers can do to ensure a rapid response from the EMS.

"When they're speaking with the dispatcher, they don't always give the information necessary to respond properly," emergency rescue Capt. Neal Mann said.

It is important to be clear in answering the dispatcher's questions, describing the type of emergency, the severity of the situation and the status of the injured person.

"It is vital for us because we may need to send additional help," Mann said.

When the EMS arrives at the scene, have one person explain the situation to the paramedics and EMTs.

"We don't need a big crowd," Mann said. "If there's a lot of people talking, it gets very confusing."

Mann said there is a big misconception about the EMS. Oftentimes people try to use medical technicians who arrive at emergencies like a visit to the doctor's office.

"We are not a group that diagnoses people," Mann said. "We can't diagnose. We can take you to the hospital."
