ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA - Reminiscent
of the major beachfront fire just a couple of years ago, <
May 5, 2003 > the Glynn County Fire Department was again called to duty to
protect another of the communities beach houses.
Early Thursday morning the
department was notified by Glynn–Brunswick 9-1-1 Center that there was a
confirmed structure fire in a residential community known as East Beach. The
call came in just as personnel where changing shifts. With the additional
personnel on hand, and knowledge of how difficult a beachfront fire can be
everyone responded. The St. Simons Island volunteers were notified and also
responded.
First arriving units reported heavy
smoke coming from the rear, ocean side, of the residence. With a water supply
immediately secured, two attack lines were deployed and advanced through the
residence to prevent the fire from spreading any farther into the structure.
A combination of favorable wind
conditions, an unusually lite ocean breeze, along with a rapid and aggressive
interior attack allowed fire fighters to quickly bring the blaze under control,
containing the fire damage to the third floor. While the fire was rapidly
extinguished, overhaul operations took some time.
The only occupant in the house at
the time of the fire, the family dog, exited the residence unharmed as fire
fighters made their entry. There were no injuries reported as a result of the
fire, which is under investigation.
