St. Simons Island is about to get a
new firehouse, police precinct station and community meeting room, all under one
roof.
Construction on the new facility at
Demere and Airport roads, in the southern portion of the island, has begun with
work on laying plumbing pipes and a foundation.
The Glynn County Fire Department
plans to move into the new firehouse in September, when construction is expected
to be complete, from its current location farther south on Demere Road.
"It's really just starting to get
under way," Glynn County Fire Department Chief Al Thomas said. "We're looking
forward to it."
The new building will be located on
the site of the former Demere Annex, which was torn down, and will have four
drive-through base stations for fire trucks, as well as living quarters for
firefighters.
The building will also house a police
precinct office and a public meeting room, Thomas said.
The firehouse is being paid for with
proceeds from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
"It's been a matter of getting to
this project," Thomas said. |
