Mike Block, owner of Golden Isles
Nissan, thought the telephone call he received around 6 a.m. Sunday saying his
dealership was on fire was a false alarm.
But as he neared the building at 531
Walker Road to check it out and saw smoke seeping from the sides and roof, he
knew it was true.
"Smoke was coming out of all the
crevices — the doors, the windows, everywhere," he said surveying the damage to
the building Monday morning.
Block walked carefully to avoid
getting soot on his clothes as he made his way through the parts department,
where the fire had started.
Its cause is still under
investigation.
Capt. Jerome Johnson of the Glynn
County Fire Department said three fire engines responded to the alarm. He said
firefighters had the blaze extinguished within five minutes.
"We were lucky they got here as fast
as they did," Block said. "It could have been a lot worse."
Damages to the main facility may take
as many as 45 days to repair.
"It's severe," Block said, estimating
that damages may run about $500,000 to repair.
Meantime, the dealership will remain
open for business.
Employees will work out of a mobile
home temporarily placed in the parking lot.
Block said he intends to keep all his
employees working during the Christmas season despite the setback.
"We'll make it," he said. |
