As many know and some are learning,
Fire Prevention Week and the Glynn County Fire Department go hand-in-hand in
South Georgia. For the past 14 years, the Department has been going into the
local mall, for this weeklong event, to teach the importance of fire prevention
to the children and adults of Glynn and surrounding counties.
The concept for this was started
around 1990, with Firefighter Garland Evors (1952-2002), Firefighter Greg
Driggers, and several others seeing the need for a fire prevention program in
the county. The program has been going strong every since, and according to
some, this is the largest Fire Prevention events in the State of Georgia.
The past events have included fire
demonstrations, both inside and outside by paid and volunteer personnel, fire
safety skits by the clown society, face paintings, fire memorabilia store, a
static display of NASCAR driver Bill Elliott’s race car, plus much more.
Once again this year, Colonial Mall
at Glynn Place, has graciously donated space in the mall for the Department to
set up for Fire Prevention Week. The Departments’ Fire Memorabilia Store, which
has firefighter’s personal collections on display for the public to see, will be
located on the Sears end of the Mall across from the old Piccadilly restaurant.
Firefighters will be on hand to do free blood pressure checks and to answer any
questions throughout the week.
