Glynn County Fire Department – Old
Station no.3 <1973-1981>
In 1973 The Glynn County Fire
Department expanded its fire protection and coverage with the opening of Station
3 near Sterling, Georgia. The station, located on U. S. Highway 341 at Newkirk
Trailer Park, was an existing garage type building, remodeled by department
personnel. The building had living quarters for the personnel and an engine
room to house a 750 gallon-per-minute pumper.
Chief Cavanaugh wanted the new
station near Sterling due to the time it took for an engine to respond from the
Ballard Fire Station. There had been an engine placed there earlier that year
which was operated by volunteers. Due to volunteers being at work during
the day this presented problems for daytime responses. The new station was
manned 24 hours a day by two paid firefighters with volunteer firefighters
assisting with fighting fires. Having a station located in this area cut the
response time in half for much of that area of the County.
