GLYNN COUNTY, GA - As the G-8
shopping list is being completed for the International Summit in the Golden
Isles, local businesses and ordinary people have come out to support The Glynn
County Fire Department. The Department is receiving donations of material and
supplies to help with the influx of additional manpower which will be visiting
the area.
April 15 is the deadline that a
request for funding for the G-8 Summit can be made. We anticipate that our
funding will be pouring in shortly thereafter. In the meantime the Department
has received donations of binoculars from Wal-Mart to use on all emergency
vehicles and apparatus. This generous contribution alone saves the department
budget some $600.00. Georgia Refrigeration, Inc. is also assisting the
department in obtaining ice machines for the mainland and island stations. That
in itself is a savings of over $4,300.00. One officer said, “… those ice
machines would be extremely helpful with all the woods fires we have had”.
Community service clubs are also assisting.
For the duration of the upcoming
Summit, the Department plans to switch from using china plates, and silverware
to using paper. With all the activities the Department will be involved in, it
will be hard to believe that there will be much time for cooking and washing
dishes. Our routines will just not be the same. Several local eating
establishments are helping and will be donating food for the firefighters busy
week.
We have already seen how the St.
Simons Volunteers have contributed with additional equipment. [See ‘St.
Simons Volunteers keep giving’ article.] We have an outstanding community
and they support our public safety departments. The Glynn County Fire Department
remains optimistic as it prepares for a successful future.
