STERLING, GA - Glynn county firefighters were busy Monday, February 2nd with
fires and fire alarms.
The day started a little before lunch when the Glynn County Fire Department
responded to a residential structure fire.
First due units reported a single story structure fully involved with fire
through the roof. Along with the initial units the Ballard volunteer
division was also dispatched. After units arrived and the size-up provided
addition apparatus where called for to assist with water supply.
A total of 3 Engines, an ambulance, an aerial apparatus and tanker responded.
Personnel initially deployed two 1-1/2" attack lines and knocked down the blaze.
A larger 2-1/2" attack line with a smooth bore nozzle was deployed to further
extinguish and saturate the smoldering remains.
Personnel ultimately overhauled the contents of one room as the fire load of
the room resulted in the fire being difficult to extinguish. Debris 18" -
24" deep was removed from the room to insure complete extinguishment and no
extension.
Immediately following this fire and as personnel were picking up equipment and checking for any further extension
a second structure fire was called in on St. Simons Island approximately 20
miles away. Chief officers and volunteer personnel
responded directly from this scene to the one on the Island. First in units,
responding from only blocks away, reported smoke coming from the gable vents.
Personnel deployed
attack lines and the second in engine brought a line from a nearby hydrant.
Before the hydrant could be connected the fire was extinguished.
The initial fire in Sterling resulted in the total loss of the structure and
contents while the St. Simons fire resulted in only minor property damage. The occupants of the St Simons residence were treated for smoke inhalation by ambulance
personnel at the scene. No other injuries were reported at either incident.
