GLYNN COUNTY, GA - Thursday, January 22, 2004  Mr. Marshall Davis of Lee Design and Management presented to the Glynn County Board of Commissions the preliminary plans and elevations for the new Fire Station #2 to be built on St. Simons Island.

The preliminary plans, as prepared by Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung, Inc. out of Savannah Georgia, reflect the functional and aesthetic desires as directed by the County Commission as well as meetings with Fire & Police Department personnel.

The new Fire Station #2 will be constructed on St. Simons Island and located at the site of the former Demere Annex, at 2001 Demere Road.  The new station will provide four apparatus bays with support areas similar to existing fire stations already constructed in the County.  In addition to providing a new fire station the building will house a police precinct for St. Simons Island with a training/meeting room that will accommodate between twenty five and fifty people.

The new station will addresses some of the improvement recommendations made by the Insurance Services Organization earlier last spring.  The new Fire Station will replace the older and much smaller facility that the Department is currently operating out of serving the southern portion of St. Simons and Sea Islands.

The original budget for the Fire station was $1,035,000.00 for the base fire station and is being funded with the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).  The additional funds necessary for the addition of the police precinct and meeting room are coming from other sources.

Construction on the new Fire Station is scheduled to begin later this year and is expected to have a construction time of approximately 8 - 12 months.
