The
Brunswick Police Department's investigation of a fire that
destroyed the historic house at 805 Monck St. Nov. 21 is
slowly moving forward.
Brunswick
Fire Marshal Derek Lazzara declined to comment on the
cause of the fire, saying only that it is still under
investigation.
According
to Sgt. Kevin Jones with the Brunswick Police Department,
police are investigating the fire as an arson.
An
arson investigation team from the Georgia Fire Marshal's
Office arrived in Brunswick the day after the fire and
combed through the charred remains of the home. An arson
investigation dog was brought in to detect whether traces
of accelerants were present at the scene.
"Five
individuals have been interviewed by investigators in
connection to the fire," said Jones.
No
arrests have been made in connection with the fire, he
said.
Police
have received a number of tips from callers since the
state fire marshal's office posted a $10,000 reward for
information leading to the arrest and conviction of those
responsible for the fire.
"A
number of people have called in with information about the
fire, one of which led to a person that had already been
questioned by police," said Jones.
With
Glynn Academy just a block from the fire site, detectives
have been working with school officials as part of the
investigation. Jones declined to comment on whether police
have questioned any students about the fire.
Ed
Pearson, who owns the home next door at 801 Monck St.
which was severely damaged by the fire, said he suspects
the fire might have been started by high school students.
He said he has complained to school officials and a number
of community organizations about students going behind 805
Monck St., which was vacant at the time of the fire, to
smoke cigarettes.
Pearson
said he had chased out some students who were smoking
behind the house just an hour before the fire started.
