GLYNN COUNTY, GA. -
Thursday July 10, 2003 at approximately 4:00 am the
Glynn County Fire Department was notified about a
fully involved residential structure fire near highway
17 south. The blaze, contained to the third floor
and attic,
proved to be a challenge for fire fighters to
extinguish.
Apparatus from two Glynn
County stations, along with volunteers and on call
personnel, responded to the scene of an early morning
house fire. While in route, responding personnel reported heavy fire visible from several miles
away. Upon arrival personnel found a residence
that was heavily involved on the third floor and attic.
Personnel also received reports that the occupants where
still in the residence. As crews began to deploy
lines an updated report came in that all occupants where
safely out of the house.
With attack lines deployed, and a
water source secured, personnel began an aggressive interior attack with two
teams. Advancing lines from the ground level up
through a winding stair well to the third floor.
Once on the third floor personnel began the task of
locating the fire, which was concealed in many small attic spaces.
Interior crews continued to search out the blaze which
was rapidly spreading through the attic.
Interior operations where discontinued and personnel
withdrawn after the blaze broke through the roof and
rapidly spread from one end of the structure to the
other. Once personnel where safely out of the
structure a defensive attack was begun utilizing aerial
master streams and deluge guns to bring the blaze under
control. After gaining control of the fire,
personnel once again entered the structure to extinguish
the fire.
Once extinguished, personnel
remained on scene for several hours performing overhaul
operations and checking for extension. Personnel
were released from the scene at approximately 8:00
am with a fire engine standing by during the
investigation process.
The
residence was turned over to the owner at approximately
9:15 following the conclusion of a cause and origin investigation.
There were no injuries were
reported as a result of the incident.
