Firefighters learn how to handle hazardous spills

Trains that carry hazardous materials don’t derail very often, said Michael Lunsford, director of Hazardous Materials Training for CSX Transportation.

But if a train car were to leave the track and flip over in the Golden Isles, he wants local emergency personnel to be ready.

First shipboard firefighter class taught in Georgia

GLYNN COUNTY, GA – On April 11th, the first Shipboard Firefighter Class in the state of Georgia was taught by Deputy Chief Harold Herndon of the Glynn County Fire Department to the 2008 Rookie Class. Deputy Chief Herndon is an NPQ Fire Instructor I and holds a Trainers certification from AGI Shipboard Fire Service Ltd. of Sidney, British Columbia and TEEX of Texas A & M University and is certified by the Department of Homeland Security as an instructor in the National Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness level training. The course, officially known as "Marine Firefighting For Land Based Firefighters Awareness Level Training" is a joint effort of Savannah Fire and Emergency Services and the Glynn County Fire Department to form the Coastal Marine Firefighting Training Group... Fire engines lead little league opening day parades

GLYNN COUNTY, GA – Saturday, April 12, the Glynn County Fire Department was busy supporting multiple public events.  The Department supported the Little League opening day festivities on both the mainland and on St. Simons Island.

The volunteer banquet: an annual tradition of honor, recognition and fellowship

SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, GA – Friday, April 4, was the night of the annual Glynn County Fire Department Volunteer Firefighter Appreciation Banquet. This night is looked forward too every year by many personnel of the Glynn County Fire Department, both paid and volunteer.  This banquet is the one night out of the year that volunteer firefighters and volunteer support staff are recognized for the hard work that they do on an annual basis..... Department has busy day of public relations

GLYNN COUNTY, GA – Everybody loves fire trucks; this was evident Saturday, April 5, when the Glynn County Fire Department was asked to have a presence at multiple events during the day.

On Saint Simons Island the department was asked to assist with a parade to raise autism awareness.  This parade called “A Walk in the Park for Autism” was being organized by the Triumph Foundation for Autism.  Engine 32 led the parade that went from Mallory Park to Neptune Park.... MORE > > >

Debris piles extinguished

GLYNN COUNTY, GA – Saturday, March 22, the Glynn County Fire Department along with Georgia Forestry representatives were called to respond to a remote area of Glynn County along Highway 82.

The area, previously involved with a control burn, had some piles of land clearing debris that were generating heavy amounts of smoke in close proximity to the highway.
